Differentials aim the engine power at the wheels, act as the final gear reduction in the vehicle and transmit the power to the wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. All-wheel-drive vehicles have to have a different differential between each set of drive wheels, while part-time four-wheel-drive systems don't have a differential between front and rear wheels.

A transfer case is unique to four-wheel drive vehicles. It directs power to both axles of the vehicle through two separate drive shafts. "Married" transfer cases are connected to the transmission and also to the front and rear axles by the drive shaft. "Independent" transfer cases are completely separate from the transmission.
